is also the story about the authors achievement of some of the dreams possessed by his mother as he became the first in his family to obtain an advanced degree
and he came to be an example of what can happen. The following paper offers a summary of the book and then examines how it can prove useful in the
field of education. Maggies American Dream by James Comer The beginning of the book is essentially the words of Comers mother as
she tells their history, as a family, and also tells of her own life. She was born in 1904 in the south, in Mississippi and how she was part of
the history of the nation as it involves sharecropping in that part of the nation. In her section she states, "My father was sharecropping. He had more education than the
white man he was working for" (Comer, 1989; 3). She grew up in very impoverished conditions, which was common, and experienced incredible racism in her childhood. At the same time
the story talks of how Maggie was a determined young woman and how she actually became financially stable enough, even during the Depression, wherein she and her family lived more
comfortably than African Americans and even many whites. In the second portion of the book the author recounts the struggles of his
father as he worked at a steel mill, and how this related to him and his search for his own identity after his father passed away. In this one sees
