As described by Ianni, in 1973, the ethnic succession theory of organized crime refers the concept that involvement in organized crime provided an alternative ladder of upward economic mobility to ethnic minorities located at the bottom o the socioeconomic ladder (Hagan 393). For the last half century, this alternative ladder has led to the Sicilian-Italian domination of organized crime; however, prior to this trend, organized crime was dominated by leaders of Jewish or Irish extraction (Hagan 393). Another common theoretical perspective that is often mentioned is the Alien Conspiracy Theory (Mallory 34). This theory specifically identifies organized crime as a product of transplanted members of the Sicilian Mafia. As this indicates, both theories hold that organized crime was brought to the US by immigrants (Mallory 36). Mafioso focuses on the life of Antonio "Nino" Badalamenti, who grew up in Sicily and then relocated to the industrial area located in northern Italy, where he is employed as a supervisor at the Fiat plant in Milan (Emerson). He is the man responsible for keeping the work brisk and the production line efficient and he runs his domestic life in a similar manner, as Nino observes that he is "like a stopwatch" (Emerson). Having established this background information, the movie focuses on his long-awaited vacation wherein he visits Camalo, his home village, for the first time in years. It is established also that this visit will be the first time that Ninos Sicilian family have met Marta, his blond, Northern Italian wife, and their two daughters (Emerson).
