celebrity status. There is no artist who conveys the power of popular music more completely than Madonna. Ever since she was propelled into the superstar stratosphere in the
early 1980s with a combination of catchy dance ditties, highly suggestive music videos, and a brilliantly marketed public image that is ever changing, Madonna is clearly a pop music phenomenon.
The 1991 release of her greatest hits compilation, The Immaculate Collection, catapulted Madonna not only to the forefront of the music genre, but it placed her in the center
of a controversial firestorm that continues to burn brightly today. In Guilty Pleasures: Feminist Camp from Mae West to Madonna, Pamela Robertson remarked, "Beginning with the appearance of her
first singles and music videos over a decade ago, Madonna has been a more consistent subject of public debate than virtually any other entertainer in history" (117). Her face
has adorned the covers of everything from Rolling Stone to the National Review, and her sexually explicit lyrics and videos had made her a favorite target of conservative editorials and
