his vision, wherein he utilized "a format he was among the first to use - a beautiful example, showing the wistful delicacy and exquisite pale lighting that characterizes his best
works" (Kren; Marx, 2007). The following paper examines how this is truly evident in his Madonna and Child (1440-1445), which possessed a sense of harmony and order through his format
of delicacy and pale lighting.. Madonna and Child by Fra Fillipo Lippi While many can look at any given painting of the Madonna and Child, the Virgin and
Infant, or any picture that depicts the Virgin Mother Mary and the infant Jesus Christ, and see similar elements and perhaps styles in the numerous paintings on the subject, there
are subtle and obvious differences between artists. Lippis version, or many versions, possessed a different style that was soft, filled with emotion and harmony, and incredibly delicate rather than simply
religious. In relationship to his work and his time one author notes, "In the 1440s, complex movements and a restless treatment of drapery are discernible" in his work and these
possessed a style "on which his great pupil Botticelli informed himself" (Olgas Gallery, 2007). At the time of painting Madonna and Child "his artistic development reached its culmination, ranking him
with Fra Angelico among the most outstanding fresco painters of his time" (Olgas Gallery, 2007). When looking at Lippis painting one does notice the powerfully soft coloring and the
lighting that makes the painting delicate and very realistic. There is a sense that the lighting is coming from the left of the viewer, as there are soft shadows behind
