Universe." There is a clear element of the transition to madness as these women are, in one way or another, trapped. One of the women is all but intentionally trapped while the other has essentially put herself in this position voluntarily and sees no way out. The following paper examines each story separately, discussing the plight of the woman, and then the paper finishes with a discussion of the two. The Yellow Wallpaper This particular woman is being kept in a "vacation" home of sorts so that she can get "better." She is a woman whose husband believes she only needs rest, and a lot of it. She is not physically sick, but being that she is a woman of the turn of the century the diagnosis is rest because her condition is not understood. In todays terms we would understand that she was anxiety ridden and depressed, suffering from panic attacks. In her day she would be told to rest and do nothing else. The womans husband is a doctor and even she says sarcastically that he knows what is best for her. In his insistence that she rest he forbids her to write and this is where we see much of the problem. This woman loves to write, and obviously sneaks off to do because we are reading about it. Writing is her passion and while it is seen as an unnecessary endeavor by the males society, it is very important to her. However, stressing the brain, considering that women are not intellectual creatures, only adds to her problems, or so the men in the story and her universe believe. From this we see that she is ultimately confined and oppressed and is told that she must do nothing in order to get better. ...
