In other words, it is a story that one tends to keep returning to long after one has read it or seen it performed, and the richness of the storys layers and themes actually rewards that returning with new and deeper understanding. It is fair to say that one might study Hamlet for years and still never grasp every secret it has to offer. In fact, some of these themes and motifs are so complex that scholars who have been studying the play for centuries still hold disagreeing views on the matter. The chief case in point is the issue of Hamlets "madness" throughout the play. In a deliberately ambiguous move by Shakespeare, we are able to cite equally compelling arguments for both sides of the case: that Hamlet is faking madness to facilitate his revenge against Claudius, and that he really is, in actuality, suffering from some mental illness. This paragraph helps the student present some of the arguments for the madness being a subterfuge on Hamlets part. Indeed, there is a great deal of evidence to suggest that Hamlet has merely affected a persona of madness in order to distract Claudius, Polonius, and other members of the court from his plan to attain revenge for his slain father. This is, ostensibly, the very plot of the play. Early on, after meeting with the ghost of his father and resolving to seek out revenge, Hamlet himself establishes this fact when he speaks with his friends and assures them that, even though he will appear to do and say outlandish or mad things, it is only a ruse: "How strange or odd soeer I bear myself / As I perchance hereafter shall think meet / to ...
