Store, , November 2010 properly! In the 1950s, Madeleine Leininger realized the world was changing,
people were interacting on a global level. Her background was anthropology, which focuses on groups in different areas of the world and it was this focus that led her to
envision a more diverse population in the future. At that time, nursing was following a medical model but Leininger saw the need to include some anthropological concepts into nursing.
Leiningers vision of transcultural nursing was different than what was happening. It was even different than a pure anthropological approach. Leininger said: "the focus was on comparative health care, health,
and well-being in different environmental contexts and cultures" (Leininger, 1995, p. 26 cited by Morgan, 2005, p. 413). She believed there was a deficit in the health care community in
that practitioners had no knowledge of different cultures (Morgan, 2005). Leininger knew from her academic studies as well as from her experience that culture influences everything a person thinks or
does. Culture is embedded in all people from birth and as the child grows, he is taught attitudes, values, behaviors and so on. Culture is historical and impacts all aspects
of life. It is these cultural values that affect how members of any given culture perceive health care. For example, many cultures in the world rely on herbs when they
