the image of God. How should this ancient text be viewed in the light of Christian doctrine? Thiessen (1959) states that "With the coming of Christ and his rejection
of the nation of Israel, God set Israel aside for this age and founded the church of Jesus Christ" (p. 307). Does this fact mean that the ancient wisdom
of the Old Testament is no longer relevant to Christian experience? An examination of theological thought and scripture reveals that the truth that humanity is patterned after the Divine is
just as relevant today and Christian life as it was when it was first revealed. In the first chapter of the Book of Genesis, verse 27 refers to humanity
being created in the image of God. This verse is preceded by a passage that refers to the creation of the all of the other creatures of the world, which
are all created "according to their kinds" (Genesis 1:24). Verse 26 states that God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness and let them rule
over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over the creatures that move along the ground." The context
of this passage implies that humanity resembles God, that is, that the human race is similar "in kind" in a manner that is analogous to the way in which the
other creatures of the world are similar. This supposition is supported by the parallel established by God placing the whole of the natural world under the dominion of
