It speaks of love, longing, hopes, dreams, anger, fear, resentment, and many other human emotions that are part of the struggle when faced with social injustice and social change. As is the case with many of Dickenss classics, this particular story has been portrayed through many movies and productions. One such production is the PBS miniseries which appeared on Masterpiece Theater. The following paper examines one character in particular from Dickens book and the PBS production. The character is Madame Defarge. The paper first examines the woman who played the role in the PBS production, Valerie Leon, and then compares and contrasts the character in the novel and the miniseries. Valerie Leon According to one particular author, "Valeries wide and varied career has encompassed nearly every major genre in British and international entertainment and any devotee of British Movie history would name her as one of the icon figures in its history" (Valerie Leon). She played in "Funny Girl" with Barbar Streisand and has worked in theater in many productions throughout her career. However, for the most part it seems that her characters are, although diverse, generally not characters which may remind us of Madame Defarge. There is an exception however, for a few years back she did play the Wicked Queen in Snow White, which could perhaps be compared to the character of Madame Defarge in Tale of Two Cities. Leon has also played in numerous British television shows as well as films.
