Because macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness among the elderly, it is important to know the signs and symptoms of this condition, since early detection is vital in terms of treatment. Macular degeneration has profited significantly from technological advances, brining relief and benefit to many patients who otherwise would have endured far greater suffering. Macular degeneration is the physical disturbance of the center of the retina called the macula (Godfrey, 2003, See also Meadows, 2002). The macula itself is the center of the retina, and is a light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye (Age-Related Macular Degeneration, 2003). Light focuses on the macula, and the millions of cells in the eye change the light into nerve signals that tell the brain what a person is seeing (Age-Related Macular Degeneration, 2003). This then, is what is referred to as central vision (Age-Related Macular Degeneration, 2003). Age-related macular degeneration is caused by hardening of the arteries that nourish the retina. This deprives the sensitive retinal tissue of oxygen and nutrients that it needs to function and thrive. As a result, the central vision deteriorates (Overview of Macular Degeneration, 2003). The macula is the part of the retina which is used for reading, driving, recognizing faces, watching t.v. and other detailed work (Godfrey, 2003, See also Meadows, 2002).
