SA147Mac.rtf In the book "Great Political Thinkers : Plato to the Present," Machiavelli says that it appears to be more proper to embrace the real truth of the matter than its imagination (Ebenstein & Ebenstein 292). According to the necessity of the case, can one see this as a criticism of Aristotle or Plato? Does the pursuit of what should be done lead to ruin? Is it really necessary for a prince to learn not to be good? All of these questions may be answered by further studying the philosophers. Machiavellis most famous work is The Prince. It is a work that has been interpreted in many different ways. It is important to keep in mind that Machiavellis motives were probably largely patriotic and an attempt to help the then current reigning Italian leader. But in analyzing the work, several questions crop up. That is, what is expected of a leader? How should a prince behave? Although the motive for Machiavelli writing this piece, and the application of this work to other eras is apparent, questions which loom large are exactly how a prince should behave and when behavior is justifiable. One of the questions at hand is whether or not it is necessary for a Prince to learn not to be good. The question sounds somewhat disingenuous or at least a seeming contradiction.
