whose numbers are dismal; he may also now drag down his wife." The quote is a good example of a leader--someone at the top of his field--who has lost favor
with the people. In a Machiavellian world, gaining the trust of the people is one of the most important things that a leader can do. In respect to the above
quote, the author surmises that Machiavelli would not have been surprised at Clintons situation (1999). A leader should start out being feared by the right people and then, in
the end , he or she might just be loved (1999). Similar to a father disciplining his young son who argues that his father is a tyrant, when the boy
grows up he thanks his father for being so strict. In other words, to some extent, fear is a desirable leadership quality. Emery (1999) goes on to explain,
and in concert with Machiavellis writings, that if one seeks love, they may end up with nothing. This is sad, but seems to possess a great deal of truth.
According to Machiavelli, the conventional wisdom is that a prince "should try not to instill fear in but to win the love of his subjects" (Viroli, 2002, p. 157).
Of course, again, Machiavelli goes against what was the conventional wisdom at the time and says the opposite of what one would think. One would believe that a politician should
