civilization. As such he is surely a man who has influenced many others, even in modern times. But, at the same time he is also a man who is confusing
and possibly one who supported evil and vicious actions on the part of leaders. He is often seen as a very selfish and evil man but yet in many ways
he was simply a man accepting the true nature of human beings. His most famous work is "The Prince" and it is in that work that we see the majority
of Machiavellis ideas, ideas and philosophies that prove influential to people of any time in history, even in todays modern world. The following paper examines his intellect as it influences
the modern world today. Machiavelli First and foremost it is interesting and informative to note that, "Though in his private life, Machiavellis reputation and personal values were beyond
reproach, his name has become an adjective for describing someone devious, deceitful, and self-serving (Pollock 45). This is not the impression one gets from reading "The Prince," for according to
Oldham it "becomes clear to the reader that Machiavelli is neither immoral nor advocating evil. His frank and candid observations on the appropriateness of the various political tactics demonstrate his
concern the ultimate goal or greater good." In essence, he is arguing, according to Oldham, that the end justifies the means and that any action which would perhaps be deemed
evil be conducted only during emergency situations and "only when the survival of the state requires such action" (Oldham). Considering that the space available in this particular essay is
