Niccolo Machiavelli was born in 1469 in Florence, Italy and was one of the more distinguished thinkers to come out of the Renaissance period and his work is still often used to describe political leaders to this day. Machiavelli was well versed in the political arena and he composed several philosophies in which he described what he considered to be the most effective ways in which to run a country.
