Mores Utopia, envisions a society where perfection is possible, but where kings and princes will not listen to reason. Hythloday has a problem with advising kings, because he contends that
they do not listen to their advisors whereas Machiavelli actually advises princes in his work entitled The Prince. A conversation between the two men-one fictional, one real-might go like this:
HYTHLODAY: I do not waste my breath talking to the princes. They only use people. MACHIAVELLI: I disagree. In fact, I have created a specific plan on how princes
should behave. For example, I say that they should do what is best for the people, even though that might not be what the people think they want. In other
words, the princes must do the right thing and not listen to what the people merely say. He has to have the peoples interests in mind. HYTHLODAY: That is good
in theory but it is a bit disingenuous. You say that princes are to look out for the people, so why do the people not have very much input? MACHIAVELLI:
The people simply are not equipped to make sound decisions. That is why they need the princes. HYTHLODAY: I disagree. In a perfect society, that notion would not be true.
MACHIAVELLI: In my view, the people are the most important concern and not the legacy of the prince. HYTHLODAY: With that, I do agree with you. MACHIAVELLI: I am
