errors. In fact, Nicia is fooled by Callimaco who claims that he will be able to make Lucrezia pregnant with a certain potion. This is an attractive offer for Nicia,
but he does not realize Callimacos real motivation. The background of the story is that Lurezia and Nicia have not been able to have children naturally. Also, Nicia is much
older than Lurezia. One might think that the ultimate stray from the marriage is inevitable. There are problems because the couple cannot conceive and also, the age difference may play
a part in the marital difficulty. Barber compares and contrasts the lives of Lurezia and Callimaco, suggesting that both live their lives in harmony with their respective environments and are
not threatened by external forces where control is not possible (Barber 457). They are somewhat happy go lucky. They do not obsess about things. It is perhaps because of the
easy nature of these characters that they find themselves in the situation presented in Madragola. Of course, when exploring this play, one can take things a step further and look
for additional meaning. Lord explains that perhaps Machiavellis Mandragola deals with the politics of the day (806). It is an idea that makes sense. After all, it is a comedy
and many comedies at least hint at politics. The author also points out that Mandragola is not a typical comedy (Lord 806). Also, Machiavelli wrote in the Mediaeval period so
his audience was certainly aware of the tradition of "medieval allegorizing" (Lord 807). Lord states: "I think it can be shown beyond a reasonable doubt that the Mandragola does indeed
