born. In fact, the advice dispensed by Machiavelli is rare. Though written in the sixteenth century, The Prince shines as an important book and one could say that Machiavellis advice,
within limits, is useful for modern leaders of today. First, it should be said that Machiavelli had great insights. Patapan (2003) explains: "Machiavelli can claim the greatest honor because he
is the first to have discerned and made public this new teaching about love--of limitless desire, of limitless variability, and therefore potentially true happiness" (p.186). He understood what made people
tick and was therefore quite capable of disseminating advice to leaders. Above all, The Prince hints at balance. According to the work, rulers must have superior qualities which exude
fairness and equity (Machiavelli, 1515). The ruler must be a judge, weighing the good and bad components of an equation and determining the right thing to do. It is not
that he applauds or promotes democracy and while he considers the will of the people important, that is not the be all and end all of leadership. Leadership is more
than simply doing what the people say they want. It is acting to fulfill the needs of the people in the most ethical way possible. What is at issue is
not just what the people desire, but what they really need. Another important question in exploring Machiavellis work is that there are implications in relation
