the fact that his ideas are autocratic and something that shakes the sensibilities of the more liberal climate of today. It is true that most who support democracy will not like Machiavellian ways, but the truth is that his motives are pure. He really cared about the people and thought that they needed leadership and not more freedom. While many prefer democracy, his ideas should not be equated with evil. People villainize Karl Marx as well. Yet, his theory of communism was designed not to do harm but to bring about equality. According to critics, Machiavelli embraces "politics down to the Piraeus never to return to the rarefied atmosphere of the Acropolis" (Lukes 561). His contempt for the good and meek in favor of the currency of selfishness and force is seen as a minor revision from the ideas of Hobbes and Locke (561). Essentially, chance can be eliminated from human life by pursuing an existence of not taking chances (561). That said, it seems that again, Machiavelli was just misunderstood. And even if his critics are correct, there are many who fit into that category who cannot be construed as evil. Those who worship money for example may have been misled but they are not necessarily evil. That Machiavelli is misunderstood is not surprising. His works are brash and leaves no room for flexibility. He is autocratic and arrogant, but he is not evil. While it is true that the work The Prince--which is perhaps his most famous--centers around the duties of leadership, it is also true that some of the rhetoric contained in the pages go to the justification of war.
