A 7 page consideration of the question of whether Machiavelli and his teachings were evil. Writing during the sixteenth century, Machiavelli concentrates on the tactics which he sees important in a ruler advancing the interest of their states and themselves in the future in a unified Italian state. The author reviews Machiavelli’s writings to contend that while it is quite obvious that he was neither virtuous or moral in the true sense of either of the terms, neither was he evil. Nicole Machiavelli is one of the most misunderstood men in history. Some, in fact, even proclaim him a teacher of evil.
How would Machiavelli respond to this accusation we ask ourselves? The answer is really quite apparent. History is quite vividly illustrated with Machiavellis accomplishments and his ideologies.
Machiavellis own writings, of course, will shed light on the accusation of him being a teacher of evil. Evil, of course, is
defined only in the eye of the beholder. What this means is that that definition can vary both by time and by circumstance. Evil, in one sense, is
a form of idealism. Machiavelli, however, is said to have claimed to have freed himself of all idealism. Others, however, contend that his commitment to power itself was
a form of idealism. Some would even contend that this quest for an ever increasing power was evil in itself. Indeed, this is a man who is most
often remembered for his ruthless pursuit of power. He was also a man who was subject to many of the societal forces which existed during his time. Some
of those forces could be interpreted as evil, as could the impact they had on Machiavelli and his teachings. At the same time, however, Machiavelli was a cultured man,
a man who sought more than simple power. From this aspect Machiavelli would appear anything but evil. Some would contend, in fact, that Machiavellis commitment to power was
really a strategic commitment, not a manifestation of any type of evil. A careful review of Machiavellis writings will reveal that indeed Machiavelli
