heart until he commits acts of appalling savagery. Macbeth and his infamous Lady tower over the other figures in the play, and yet Macduff finally bring the tyrant to justice,
despite his status as a somewhat minor character. This paper briefly compares and contrasts the two men. Discussion Macbeths great and fatal flaw is ambition, though he is not nearly
as ambitious as his wife. In fact, it may be fairly said that its not until he hears the witches prophesy that he considers the throne might be within reach,
and determines to act against King Duncan. Even then he wavers in his purpose; after the murder, he is completely unmanned and remorseful, even going so far as to wish
he had never done the deed: "Wake Duncan with thy knocking! I would though couldst!" (II.ii.71). Macbeth seems to be driven not only by ambition, but by a belief
in superstition. He never for a moment questions the witches words, but takes them at face value and acts on them immediately. Its probably that they have put into words
the longing that he has never articulated until now, but to a reader or audience member he seems to be at one with the dark and mysterious creatures of the
heath. There is something essentially uncivilized about Macbeth, which may be why he is such an outstanding soldier. Macduff doesnt come into the play until Act II; it is he
who finds Duncans body, and immediately suspects Macbeth. We can infer from this that Macduff is a good judge of character, though he does not seem to be a man
of strong imagination or of great passion. If he had met the witches on the heath, it doesnt seem credible that he would have done more than laughed and ridden
