he wanted. He was propped and prodded, manipulated and then left to his own devices, but it was the influence of others that caused him to commit murder. Of course,
one could say that about any murderer. Perhaps Jeffrey Dahmers mother inadvertently put the seeds of cannibalism in his head as a little boy. Yet, society does not shun her.
Jeffrey takes the blame for his misdeeds. Similarly, while people try to blame the witches for Macbeths behavior, it is not a credible argument. Shakespeare writes: "The weird sisters, hand
in hand, Posters of the sea and land, Thus do go about, about; Thrice to thine and thrice to mine, And thrice again to make up nine. Peace! The charms
wound up" (325). One could say that the witches were casting a spell on Macbeth, and this would render him helpless. There is a reference to numbers and one has
to wonder whether or not that is significant. Certainly, the witches are trying to effect change, but in combing through the text, there really is no proof of that.
One cannot deny that Macbeth expresses a unique fascination with the weird sisters, or witches, and that he is also intrigued by the fact that they make predictions. Unlike the
psychic hotline, the sisters seem to single him out. It does not appear as if he was looking for guidance. Rather, it was fate that seems to draw the sisters
in, but they go away for a time which makes them all the more intriguing. If one were to blame the witches for his fate, one would have to look
