to stir the mix, and blood lines become a central theme. From the beginning, we see the fall of Duncan, who is
split in half by a murderer. In backflash, we are presented with that predicted murder when we catch up with Macbeth returning from battle to the castle of his king.
He is in consort with the witches for his own fortune. Despite feeling ambiguous about the plans already set in motion, Macbeth will take Duncans life for the throne of
Scotland. The student may want to comment that Macbeth cannot decide if his action will be fair or foul? To him it
is both. When Banquo asks the witches who won the day on the battlefield, the witches answer that Banquo will be "lesser
than Macbeth and greater" and "not so happy, yet much happier." As Banquo states his distrust of the witches dichotomy, he is also singing their praises, for he believes he
will be the real winner in the scheme. Macbeth talks to himself about his desire to murder. He is tortured by it, thinks
its wrong, but is resolute to fate. Foul or fair? Macbeths confused sense of good and evil becomes his nemesis, his life becomes foul even before the murder is committed.
