Company, 3rd Battalion. He had almost 2,200 men under his command, and it was his first time out of the United States. He was 21. MacDonald opens his book by describing the companys arrival in Longuyon: "Dusk was approaching when the French locomotive, whistling shrilly to announce its arrival, wheezed into the station hidden sedately among the green-clad mountains along the French-Belgian border" (MacDonald, 1999, p. 2). One of the most interesting observations MacDonald makes, and one which typifies his relationship to the company, at least at the beginning, is this: "I dropped back from my position at the head of the column to survey the long line of men ... tall ones, short ones, not unlike similar companies I had commanded in the US before coming overseas. Perhaps there was something about the way these men walked-the confident swagger perhaps" (MacDonald, 1999, p. 2). MacDonald says that he would have known, even if he hadnt been in the Army but had merely been watching the column march along the street, "that underneath ... the unpressed uniforms lay a wealth of battlefield experience" (MacDonald, 1999, p. 2). He recounts that experience in a rather clumsy device, but thinking to himself about the battles the company has been involved in, but that is perhaps due to the fact that hes not primarily a writer but a soldier and a historian. No matter how he does it, he tells the reader the companys history, and he realizes that hes the real greenhorn-and hes suddenly in command of a bunch of men who have seen action when he has not, and who will be depending on him for their very lives. Its an awesome responsibility, and hes afraid: "I felt weak and ineffectual" (MacDonald, 1999, p. 3). His reaction must be the same ...
