to refer to it as a history. However, Shakespeare took many liberties with the storyline and covered a broad spectrum rather than one actual event. For this reason
it is not historical in context so much as it is a tragedy that highlights the evilness in man. MacBeth is seen to be very overly ambitious to a point
of greediness. It is this character flaw upon which the three witches prey, drawing out the evilness of man through the personification of MacBeth. While MacBeth is a
brave man, he is merciless and a true tyrant when in power. To complement this greedy streak in MacBeth is his wife, the Lady MacBeth who is as bloodthirsty and
greedy as they come. She has no use for feminine wiles, and makes no bones about pointing that out to people; her thirst for wealth and power overcomes all
other characteristics and she is, in many ways, much worse than her husband is. THE BEGINNING OF THE EVIL It is on his way home from battle that MacBeth,
travelling with Banquo, a general in the army, meets three witches. MACBETH Speak, if you can: what are you? First Witch All hail, Macbeth! hail to
thee, thane of Glamis! Second Witch All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! Third Witch All hail, Macbeth, thou shalt be
