give rise to a type of suspense or mystery as the characters seek to solve some question which remains integral to their peace of mind and happiness. Even though it
is not considered a mystery, per se, Shakespeares Hamlet possesses many of the same characteristics of a mystery story. In Shakespeares play, Hamlet, the solving of the question of his
fathers death ends up being the vehicle to self discovery for Hamlet. As is often the case in mystery novels, the solution to the mystery becomes increasingly less important as
the revelation about oneself or some universal truth. In Hamlets case, then, what he gains from his investigation of his fathers death is an understanding of what it means to
be a true King. He realizes that it is not birthright that makes one a good leader, but the inherent character of the man. Act III, sc. ii in
Shakespeares Hamlet can be said to be the climax of the play. Everything that Hamlet has suspected until then, he feels, will be made clear to him. Despite the fact
that at this point he has alienated his mother and the one other woman who loves him truly (Ophelia), and disregarding the fact that he has pretty much destroyed any
hopes he may have of retaining and gaining the throne, Hamlet with obsessive focus, directs his attention to the matter at hand: creating the perfect mousetrap. And who are
the suspects? Many would state that Claudius is the suspect, but more correctly, it could be said, is that it is both Claudius and Gertrude, Hamlets mother. It is also
