athletes had embraced the concept by changing their names (Cassius Clay, the boxer, to Muhammad Ali; and basketball player Lou Alcindor to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). But Islam didnt really start coming
into the mainstream thought until after it was revealed that fanatic Muslims were responsible for the bombing of the World Trade Center and Pentagon. This is when Islam moved into
popular culture - and became a true object of interest for the media. In the early 2000s, Muslim and Islam finally made the mainstream - but not necessarily in a
positive or thought-effective way. In those days, mentioning the word "Islam" would bring to mind violence, terrorism and death. The media picked up on all of this, running stories about
various Islamic sects, how they hated America, and would do whatever they could to wipe the United States off the face of the earth.
However, even prior to 9/11, there were issues about how western media regarded Islam. Said, in his 1981 book Covering Islam: How the Media and Experts Determine
How We See the Rest of the World wrote his treatise based on the first Gulf War and even before that, to the western worlds relationship with Iran. Said pointed
out, even before Islam made it to the major media of the world, that both people and politics related to the Middle East and Islam are non-rational and are even
savage, bordering on the verge of savage (Said). According to the media, Said notes, Islam cultures are considered to be politically and culturally backward, compared to the West (Said).
In recent years, however, there has been more question as to whether Muslims and Islam has been accurately portrayed in the Western media.
