and gender. During the past 30 years, however, the workforce has undergone a huge culture change. More and more women are entering
the workforce in jobs ranging from menial to managerial. And the workforce isnt all white anymore, either - rather, its multi-colored and multi-ethnic. On top of that, global competition has
meant that U.S. companies must learn to work not only with workforces overseas, but must know how to treat overseas employees when they are on loan to companies within the
borders of the United States. Although the shift to multicultural workforces has been rapid, the ability of American business to adapt to
those shifts has not been. As a result, misunderstandings, communication gaps and other problems loom when a boss wants to have a simple staff meeting with a workforce that could
consist of a black man, an Asian woman, a white woman and a Hispanic man. It is incumbent on American companies, therefore, to try to determine how to communicate between
the cultures. But do current programs in existence work in this endeavor? The purpose of this paper is to examine exactly
what multiculturalism means to todays workforce, how it impacts communications, and how and what businesses should be doing to consider the needs of an ever increasingly diverse work force. The
