of the melting pot is a false one on some accounts, and instead of a melting pot with a blending of its diverse ingredients the country is left with segmented
areas that have not or will not become integrated into American society. Several ways exist in which this multiculturalism might be achieved in regard to higher education. Firstly, critical
issues and challenges that affect multicultural students populations must be studied. Secondly, a discovery of the fundamental reforms and institutional changes needed in American higher education to eliminate structural barriers
needs to be explored. And lastly, balanced academic programs and services need to be in place for multicultural students. Multicultural education began with the Civil Rights movement in the early
60s, but now has been broadened to not only encompass African Americans, but also any and all racial and ethnic groups. Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Asian Americans have
advanced bilingual education legistlation, theory, and practice(Sleeter,McLaren 2000). At its very core, multiculturalism seeks to expose inequalities in terms of education and opportunities for the minority while giving pride, dignity
and strength back to its community. By the time the mid-1980s rolled around demographic reports were predicting that people of color would become the jamority during the 21st century and
as a result of this prediction, multicultural education began to receive renewed interest(Sleeter,McLaren 2000, also Lopez 2001). In the pre-collegiate areas, workshops began to abound with teachers adding supplementary lessons
to their lesson plans, interpreting multiculturalism to mean that they should study other cultures through a type of social studies class(Sleeter,McLaren 2000). Unfortunately, the predominantly white teachers mis-interpreted the goal
