But throughout the 20th century, the rise of globalization has meant multicultural work teams. On the one hand, this is a good thing; these work teams provide companies with
a great deal more understanding (and in many cases, a 24/7 workforce), it can also mean a great deal more conflict and issues that occur.
Many people point to diversity as a positive thing, complete with teachable moments and the opportunity to broaden ones horizons. And this is great in theory. But in
reality, when one team member is offended when another team member makes a comment meant in jest, but was taken as an insult, it can be difficult to focus on
the positives of a global, multicultural team. Its difficult enough to get people of the same race and same age to work together effectively, let alone those who come from
different backgrounds, different cultures and different countries. Any manager who assumes that getting people together in the same room and forcing them to work together will result in a peaceful
solution will end up with a rude awakening. In short, multicultural teams can get along and work very productively - but it
takes careful management and an understanding of what motivates the team members to ensure that the team functions in a positive manner. The Challenges of Cultural Diversity
