home. To this extent, then, Janet Gonzalez-Mena has written a book called, Multicultural Issues in Childcare, which address the many ways in which the classroom teacher might engage the parent
in the educational process so that the good foundations, which are laid during the day, are built upon at home. One of the more compelling messages which comes from
this reading is that socially, politically, economically, a good child care program could have far reaching consequences, not only to the immediate community in which it is implemented, but it
can be theorized that in a ripple effect would spill over into other areas of the community. The author shows how those who are gainfully employed and able to meet
their families basic needs are less likely to commit crimes. Therefore, the program could have a peripheral impact on crime in the community. What comes to mind and what seems
to stimulate ones critical thinking on the matter is when she talks about cultural differences that may have a direct bearing on the teachers relationship with the children and the
teachers relationship with the parents as well. For example, in some cultures, smiling at someone directly is a sign of disrespect. So is looking someone directly in the eyes.
Many teachers use this direct eye contact as a way of gathering their students attention, but if this goes against ones upbringing it could be sending mixed messages to the
students. And, it could cause problems when the child goes back to the home environment and begins initiating the direct eye contact. Mena states that in todays fast paced
