And that is what all art does, is it not, challenge the viewer, to make him/her think about previously held concepts about right and wrong, wild and tame, male and female, good and evil? Perhaps art is simply doing what it has been doing for centuries, challenging the human mind beyond the parameters of emotional comfort. To that end, then, Mulholland Drive qualifies on a large scale. PLOT A woman is abandoned on Mulholland Drive, following a car accident, suffering from amnesia. She makes her way to an apartment where she meets an aspiring actress (Watts) who helps her put the pieces of her life, and the mystery of it all, back together. THE STORY The plot for Mulholland Drive is difficult to nail down simply because there is such a plethora of them. For example, in the first scene a sex pistol of a woman, named Rita, very upper class, is riding in the back of a limousine. As it makes its way up Mulholland Drive, the driver stops and pulls a gun on her. Before he can kill her, though, the limo is rammed from behind by a couple of cars who happened to be drag racing. This gives the woman a chance to get away. She runs into the city and for some reason ends up sleeping in an apartment she finds conveniently vacant. The next scene and set of characters to be introduced are a couple of guys in a diner. One is older than the other by nearly twenty five years or more. The young geek like guy is nervous and talking to the older man who remains calm ...
