the goal of most women is to a housewife and mother; so much so that, in fact, everyone in the book refers to Clarissa as "Mrs. Dalloway" rather than by
her given name. However, the character of Clarissa has the soul of an artist, one that takes pleasure in things that delight the senses, which is why, throughout the book,
Clarissa is horribly ambivalent about her life with Richard, especially when her old lover, Peter Walsh, shows up after an absence of years. The main question in this book then
becomes why did Clarissa marry Richard Dalloway in the first place instead of marrying the man who truly wanted her and needed her? Why did she end up going the
more conventional route for her life, rather than striking out with the less stable Peter and fulfilling her passion for him? This is the question that this paper will attempt
to answer. The story describes a day in June 1923; a Day in the Life of Clarissa Dalloway, an upper-class English woman.
Clarissa, who has been married for a long time, has a daughter, Elizabeth, who is 17 years old. The story also contrasts Clarissa with an unknown man, Septimus Smith, and
his own resulting suicide because he believes his life is not worth living (which, in many ways, parallels Clarissas own ambivalence toward her own life). Although Septimus suicide is important
overall (and demonstrates vividly the difference in the class structure of early 20th century England), for this particular paper, it will not be referred to again.
