When the idealistic Mr. Smith goes to Washington to serve in the Senate, his eyes are opened to the corrupt ways
of the entrenched politicians. This movie, while entertaining seems to portray several messages and it is interesting to note that based on the film, Americas democratic ideas seem to owe
a debt to the ideas of classical Grecian ideas of democracy as well as ideas from early Renaissance Europe. Actually, it
should come as no surprise that the founding fathers based a good deal of the Constitution on Grecian ideas of democracy. Most of the founding fathers were very well educated
and well read men, who would have been cognizant of ancient Greek stories and writings. One of the earliest writers, Plato, wrote about a democracy founded by a fictitious character
named Socrates. In this society, a democratic way of life is established (or at least for a time). Socrates states that the
relationship between a city or Nations government and a person is much like that of a parent/child relationship. The state nurtures the individual, providing the best for the citizen as
is possible. In return, the citizen only can offer his or her allegiance and gratitude. Also in the same vein of thought, he states that just as a child
has the right to demand to be fed, so also the citizen has a right to demand to be fed or cared for in the way in which they have
