is viewed as worthless to all. This is the internal and external conflict at the heart of Federico Garcia Lorcas play, Yerma. This play revolves around the themes of motherhood,
what it really means, and the tragedy of viewing the worth of a person by purely cultural means. The name Yerma is actually a Greek derivative, states Tubert, as it
stands for barren land. Therefore, one could construe this to mean that Yerma is infertile, and yet in an interesting way, tied to the Earth, to the land. In a
symbolic statement, then, Lorca is perhaps suggesting that as Yerma is an unproductive female, so too is the land that they live in unproductive. Both are obvious tragedies. Yerma
is a poor peasant woman whose life is going downhill. After seven years of marriage she and her husband Juan have not had any children. This, of course, is attributed
to her inability to produce the children, though we are never told if Juan is infertile. During the time in which this is set, the guilt is assumed to be
the womans. To that end, Yerma desperately desires a child. Without a child her worth and status in the village are null. Having tried all various sorts of efforts to
produce a child, she eventually seeks out the village sorceress where she is involved in witnessing a pagan ritual. When her husband Juan finds out he rushes to stop her
from participating. When he reaches the ceremony he begins to verbally and physically assault her. She, in turn, kills him. Many have not properly understood the obsession that Yerma has
for a child. Most who misinterpret her desire call it pathologic or attempt to place some sort of psychological stigma onto her desire and subsequent actions. However, given the cultural
