to have a tremendous recovery time. One of the more significant losses, as the result of a mother-loss, is that of self-esteem. Mother loss accounts for a host of problems
that may assail daughters as they enter their teens. If the daughter is already in her teens when she experiences the loss, the impact can be even more traumatic. Hope
Edelmans book, Motherless Daughters: The Legacy of Loss, states that some of the various issues that arise for the teen who has lost her mother include feeling different from other
people, especially their friends. For the teen who has lost her mother, she feels set apart, different. The impact to her self esteem will be enormous. She no longer has
the female role model to ask questions of, no longer has the stability of the routine that she once knew. The plans and predictability that were once her future, have
shifted. Edelman also states that in an effort to spare the feelings of the family members and especially the children, people often mean well but actually do more damage
by never discussing the mother. It is as if she simply disappeared without a trace or that she simply never existed. This can bring about a sense of frustration and
depression in the teen. Accompanying the self esteem issues, then, may very well be the issues surrounding keeping and honoring their deceased parent. There is some consensus that loss of
