to write because he or she is driven to do so. This may be for several reasons all of which probably sound nobler in the writers own head. Ostensibly, they
write because they feel passionately about some issue, some condition, or some way of life which seems to be getting short shrift from society. Such would be the case of
Neil Simons plays. Though they are placed in the comedy genre, it has to be said that these plays carry some deadly serious weight with them if the audience member
is willing too look. Poignant, often subtle treasures of truth and nuances of honesty about the human condition come shining through, if one only stops laughing long enough to really
look and listen to what is being said and shown. In every work of literature, there are certain unwavering elements which must be present in order for the work
to stand on its own literary legs. First, there must be a believable protagonist. The audience must feel some connection with him and to him and must eventually find something
about him that they like(attempts at creating anti-heroes aside, of course). Then, to have any kind of story at all, the protagonist has to WANT something, something that is not
easily obtainable, something which continues to be frustrated. In the quest to obtain or satisfy this desire or goal, the character learns something about himself or others which will leave
