Hampden-Turner. After all, looking on the surface, one book (Edsel) focused solely on the exploits of a group of men and women charged with roaming Europe during World War II
to locate and save precious art that was systematically being looted by the Nazis. The Trompenaars/Hampden-Turner text, on the other hand, has nothing to do with World War II, Nazi
Germany or the discovery and protection of valuable artworks. But delving beneath the surface, these two works talk about something different; the importance
of art as a harbinger of culture, and the importance of culture in the creation of art. Nazi looting of Europes art was designed to do two things; first, to
be collected in one spot where eventually it would end up in a great museum to benefit the German state. And two, to rid the world of individualism that is
created through art, in order to foist a particular culture on the people whom the Nazi Party governed. By "standardizing" everything, by wiping past cultures clean, it was believed that
the Thousand-Year Reich could succeed. Historical Background The Monuments Men (which also included women) collected art experts, museum curators, scholars, architects and
artists from 13 nations to "save as much of the culture of Europe as they could during combat" (Edesel, 2009, 50). Basically, the purpose for the MMFA was to mitigate
cultural damage, even while the horrors of World War II raged (Edsel, 2009). Previous to this, destruction of cultural institutions was almost a given during wartime, as forces fighting didnt
