with automatic weapons waited for the Rangers to land, and then the rest would be written into history with the blood of what was supposed to be essentially a peace
keeping mission. What went wrong? It was determined that part of the problem in Somalia was the warlord Farah Aidid and his second in command who were more or
less placing a stranglehold on the countrys ability to get food and goods to places where they needed to go. In a covert operation, American military were supposed to go
in and capture these two Somalie leaders, and return to base. Estimates had the operation taking only an hour. What may have happened, as one draws upon hindsight, was
that there were a combination of events which took place, both before and after, which pretty much laid the groundwork for this missions failure. Chester Crocker, a correspondent for Newsweek
states that Clinton mismanaged and misjudged the region. The original humanitarian mandate in Somalia was expanded to include policing of efforts and in some areas provisional governance. Then, for reasons
that cannot be found logically, Clinton replaced ALL of the mission commanders. Not only did this waste precious time but the relationships which had taken months and in some cases,
years, to develop with the Somali people was gone. Additionally, the White House called for a reduction in troops while increasing the command arrangements to exclude local militias. This set
the stage for an ever increasing resentment between both groups of militia. Eventually, it would blow up in Americas face. No one in their remotest dreams considered that
