case of Marisol Escobar, it is a combination of all of these characteristics, and more. Both those who influenced her and those she influenced have a great deal to do
with her mantle of greatness and for the wonderful works which she has given to the world. EARLY INFLUENCES Unlike many artists who have to struggle against the tide
of poverty their entire lives, Marisol was born into an affluent family. This afforded her the time to study uninterrupted. Coming from a family background that was devoutly Catholic it
is no wonder that one can see in her earlier works elements of salvation, spiritual natures, and the idea of the mysterious and the unknowable(Groves 2004). This belief in Catholicism
was taken to the extreme when as a young girl she put herself through many acts of martyrdom by walking on her knees until they were bleeding and tying cords
around her waist(Marisol Escobar 2004). From an early age she began producing representational drawings. This was nurtured by her family and early art teachers. However, one of the major
influences on her life was the period of time in which she lived. World War II broke out while they were living in Paris and because of the impending war
Marisols father moved the entire family to safer climes. These tumultuous times had to have made an impact on the impressionable teenager that Escobar was at the time. INFLUENCES
