is doomed to fail. In this case, the organization in question is a childrens hospital, that is attempting to transition from a paper-based
data system for its medical records to an electronic records system, also known as electronic medical records (EMR) or electronic health records (EHR). The benefit of implementing an EHR system
is that the hospital staff will have better access to the patients records, while offering better and faster communication between providers. However, as anyone who has tried to implement any
kind of information technology knows, it involves more than putting in a bunch of computers, a network, server and software, then telling people to use it. A new IT system,
whether its EHR or any other kind, means a change in processes and a change in how an organizations members need to input and/or access information.
A part of this involves what makes our organization tick. And to understand this, its important to know the organizations vision, mission and strategy statements.
Though mission statements and vision statements are often confused with one another, they actually do two different jobs. A mission statement defines an
