vehicle for the message. This is very much the case, the student will want to state, in Katherine Mansfields short story, Miss Brill. One of Mansfields more interesting short stories,
this short work also illustrates how a character driven story can also utilize many literary devices without drawing attention to them and away from the story. The student may wish
to briefly define what a character driven story is as opposed to a plot driven story. The emphasis, as in Miss Brill, is on the characters development, or lack thereof,
and of the internal as well as the external struggles of the character. Setting and plot take a backseat to the development of the character. So it is in Mansfields
Miss Brill that the reader is introduced to the inner musings of an old woman who has managed to remain insignificant most of her adult life, though she is not
convinced of that fact. However, events will force her into a personal growth moment in which she will have to answer for and, in some respects, pay her dues for
living a life of illusion. The point of view is told in the third person and chronicles the span of one whole day in the life of Miss Brill. But,
this day, of course, will differ from all others. What makes this a significant day in Miss Brills life is that she is about to be handed a personal mirror
of sorts which will shatter her illusion of who she really is and what she really does not have. "She had really become an expert, she thought, at
listening as though she didnt listen, at sitting in other peoples lives just for a minute while they talked round her(Mansfield 50). She is a professional eavesdropper, to start with.
