enjoying the movie. With the creative eye of an artist, the directors vision creates a movie that not only evokes an emotional response, but also leaves room for continued introspection
due to some aspect of the movie. This emotional catharsis is what draws viewers to the theaters, and has been drawing them since the first character burst onto the screen.
This mise en scene is acutely observable in the films Vertigo and Rear Window by Alfred Hitchcock. One can tell a Hitchcock from a Fellinni in a heartbeat. Why? Because
of the auteur inherent in all of their work. Those who would argue that the director has no influence, that he is merely putting the parts together in a creative
way, sorely miss the mark. A director, in many ways, is analogous to the author in that he takes the raw materials and makes something new of it. Yes, he
takes the lines, the actors and the various physical properties that are given to him, but it is up to him to find the best way to portray the heart
of the film in the best way possible. This cannot be done in a vacuum. It requires human input, human interaction, emotion, philosophies and personal style. Understanding the auteur, then,
lends great insight into the cinematic development of any film, especially the films of Hitchcock. In his movies, every shot has a meaning and a purpose. However, his form is
never distracting, and in some wonderful scenes, his camera angle or editing almost seems "simple" and ordinary. Thus, the main focus point is always the story itself. There does seem
to be a observable pattern to Hitchcocks mise en scene, in that at least a good deal of his films have an overlying tone of longing for the past, or
