gates. Santiagos claim to fame, of course, is that it is the rumored site of the burial remains of St. James and home to unexplained miracles. Are the miracles the
result of religious fervor or is there something extraordinary occurring? The city of Santiago de Compostela has become synonymous with pilgrimage. Many of the religious undertook a pilgrimage from
France to Spain, walking much of the way, or if the penitent has certain just cause, to expostulate themselves, flagellate themselves, or walk on their knees, etc... This is big
business in Santiago as there are a grouping of shelters, hostels and various offerings for pilgrims making the trip. Each place has a designated stamp to stamp on the pilgrims
passport which shows evidence of the journey(Melczer 124). Those making the pilgrimage have a certain attire that they done, looking much like a friars robes, a large shepherds stick
(though most use it for walking), and a large conch-like shell (used for dipping water along the roadside). This uniform also identifies them as someone on a spiritual journey and
as such most will treat the pilgrim with respect and will offer assistance when necessary. However, not everyone who undertakes the journey does so for spiritual reasons, but rather for
the cultural and curiositys sake. Not everyone opts for the traditional costume, opting more for the backpack and walking stick. The Pilgrimage itself ends at the Cathedral in Santiago.
This Cathedral is built for the Apostle Santiago. The remains were reportedly moved from Merida to Galicia when the Muslims invaded. Highly ornate and baroque in nature, this impressive and
