characters serve this same purpose. This story is set in the Civil War Era and chronicles the struggle of two people as they make a personal odyssey which will eventually
result in their own personal healing. Paralleled with the massive wound that the Civil War left on the country as a whole, this book chronicles on a personal level the
emotional scars left on the people who survived. Inman is a Confederate soldier who is so badly scarred from the war that he has lost all his regard for humanity.
A deserter from the army, he is in search of the meaning in life, what his purpose is supposed to be. Ada is a sheltered and cultured daughter of a
rich man who suddenly finds herself alone and unable to cope with the many stresses of daily living. Her odyssey is to discover that inner strength that had always been
there. They find one another, and in the end, aid each others personal search. Minor characters serve a large role in this book. They offer assistance, as in Inmans case,
and they offer comfort and information, as in Adas case. Minor characters have the dual purpose in this book of offering more information about the main characters, their motivations, their
dreams, rather than lean on heavy exposition from the author. In this respect, then, it serves to place the reader in the middle of the action, rather than a passive
