In 1890 the Mesabi Range was discovered by white explorers and settlers to contain giant lodes of iron ore. As such, there was an immediate rush much like the Gold
Rushes of California. Camps sprang up in similar fashion and as can be expected, turf wars began. Many of the towns which exist still today were established during this time.
Towns such as Coleraine, Nashwauk, Chisholm, Mountain Iron, Eveleth, Hibbing and Biawak owe their early beginnings to the ore which lay beneath the surface. Historically the Mesabi Range serves
as a testament to the little guy. It was here that Lewis Merrit held off the likes of J.P. Morgan and Rockefellar, since it was he that first laid claim
to the large deposits of iron. In fact, experts had passed over the spot stating that there wasnt anything there, but Merrit seemed to know better. He managed to hold
onto the land for a good while until finally, bested by money and the power that money wields, the iron passed over into the huge corporate monster called United States
Steel (owned by Andrew Carnegie). John E. Merritt in a speech commemorating the 40th anniversary of the discovery of Mountain Iron recalled the discovery: "I remember just how beautiful
that ore was, glinting blue there under the deep green of the pines. But I am unable to describe to you just what this No. 1 pit meant to us.
