These safety assessment guidelines were updated in 1996 (Society of Automotive Engineers, 1996). The Military (MIL) Standard (SD) 882B System Safety Program Requirements is issued by the Department of Defense and is to be used by all departments and agencies of the Department of Defense (Department of Defense, 1984). These safety requirements were initially initiated on 28 June 1977 and are known as MIL-STD-882A; they were then modified by the Department of Defense on 30 March 1984 as MIL-STD-882B, which supercedes MIL-STD-882A (Department of Defense, 1984). The Department of Defense (Diet) notes that the "objective of a system safety program within the Department of Defense (Diet) is to make sure safety, consistent with mission requirements, is designed into systems, subsystems, and facilities, and their interfaces" (Department of Defense, 1984). The Society of Automotive Engineers notes that the document known as SAE ARP4761 presents guidelines to assure compliance with safety requirements and can be used to show compliance but these are not the only means of showing compliance (Society of Automotive Engineers, 1996). These guidelines primarily relate to FAR/JAR 25.1309. The Guidelines present industry accepted safety assessments related to Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA), Preliminary System Safety Assessment (PSSA) and System Safety Assessment (SSA).
