These days, however, Nintendo has competition - a lot of it. Although the so-called "King of Gameland" continues to be the worlds largest game-software publisher, and although Nintendo continues to dominate the handheld game market with Game Boy Advance, its up against some very heavy competition with Microsofts Xbox and Sonys PlayStation series (Kunii and Greene, 2003). Since Nintendos GameCube video game console launch in 2001, the company has just sold 9.6 million of the consoles; far short of the 13.8 million target (Kunii and Greene, 2003). According to market researcher NPDFunworld, GameCube and Xbox has a 15 percent share of the global market, while Sonys PlayStation 2 (PS2) has 70 percent. One way in which Nintendo is attempt to compete is by introducing titles that are more rough-and-tumble than Mario and Pokemon (Kunii and Greene, 2003). Metal Gear Solid will be released by year-end, and will be followed up by a Star Wars epic and other sports and action titles (Kunii and Greene, 2003). But Nintendo wont add too much gore to its lineup - Nintendo isnt going to make criminal games (Kunii and Greene, 2003). Meanwhile,as Nintendo has sold 120 million Game Boy and Game Boy Advance units, effectively owning the portable game machine market, Sony announced the launching of the PSP, a handheld unit that could play PS2 games, by 2004 (Kunii and Greene, 2003). Experts note that the PSP could seriously erode the Game Boy market for Nintendo (Kunii and Greene, 2003).
