Even while more and more people are becoming linked via computer and into cyberspace, more and more peoples computers are becoming at risk for viruses (some simple, some dangerous), hacking and other breaches of security. For one thing, identity fraud is easier these days to initiate, as it doesnt take a hacker very much to go into someones computer and steel credit card or bank account information while an individual is online. In the past, the ways to deal with security breaches have included software, firewalls and special user passwords. There have, however, been flaws in these methods as well - and systems that have not been quite so secure as they should be. As a result, Microsoft, which brought the world the Disk Operating System that made PC use so widespread today, is working on a project called Palladium. Palladium, which is currently under development, is being touted as the new breakthrough in PC security, as it goes beyond software development into the workings of the PC itself. Unlike security as advanced through software, Microsoft wants security to be a fundamental part of a computers hardware system (Costello and Sayer, 2002). As such, during the past summer of 2002, the company was working with Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to develop and design the chips(Costello and Sayer, 2002).
