logistic tactics in general. Unfortunately, there is little, if any, information about Microsofts specific supply chain and logistics plans. The literature
does, however, have a great deal to say about supply chain management - and we can use this to discuss how supply chain management works in the software industry.
Microsoft - An Overview Microsoft got its launch when Harvard dropouts Bill Gates and
Paul Allen partnered together in a garage to figure out what they could do to improve a computers operation. At the time, computers were mostly large, and they took up
the majority of a large basement. Such computers operated through vacuum tubes, which could be difficult to replace. But by the time
the 1970s rolled around, computing power was starting to be more portable. Wang, a company in Boston, began manufacturing "world processors," in other words, machines like typewriters, but instead of
on paper, words were typed on cathode ray tubes, then stored on floppy disks. Apple was another that dove into the computer realm fairly early, as did Atari and IBM
(with its DisplayWriter). The problem was, however, storage. The IBM DisplayWriter used a proprietary program called DisplayWrite, involving a convoluted system
