Essay / Research Paper Abstract
Michel Foucault discusses modernity along two threaded lines. He posits that modernity begins with a fantasy created space implemented by a subculture that defines itself through a subset of names, places and events. In support of this, the subculture creates within its world a spectacle of heroes in which the icons of the subculture are paraded in front of the culture by performing feats of survival, usually dark, cruel and even gruesome tests. Modernity is a created world, Foucault said, where discipline and punishment are inseparable from display to create the group spirit, or subculture, itself.... jvOrntlm.rtf

subculture are paraded in front of the culture by performing feats of survival, usually dark, cruel and even gruesome tests. Modernity is a created world, Foucault said, where discipline and
punishment are inseparable from display to create the group spirit, or subculture, itself. One such modern subculture is created and recreated at Walt Disney World and MGM Studios, two theme
parks which fuse fantasy with a parade of human-like monsters and characters who, through discipline and punishment, assume a definable power structure. This power is then dispersed throughout the subculture
of park visitors. The creation of power fantasy worlds, or "orientalism," derives from precepts originally introduced by Foucault, who stated that any
modern subculture is created when fantasy elements are wound inseparably with the elements of discipline and punishment. This combination creates within it a cultural discourse defining its own source of
power. This power structure is so complete that myriads of humans join the subculture willingly and in joining the subculture submit themselves to specific forms of discipline and punishment, or
at least the observance of it. At MGM Studios and Walt Disney World, human submission to discipline and punishment is complete, though temporary. The submission is long enough for the
attendees to define themselves as part of a culture created within the Walt Disney-MGM Studios fantasy space. Foucaultian Modernity
